What are Worm Castings?
Worm castings are the end result of the worm's digestive system. High quality worm castings will have the texture of fine garden compost or coffee grounds and have a rich, earthy smell. Their texture, water absorption and nutrient makeup makes them a perfect soil base and additive for both indoor and outdoor gardens.
Why are worm castings called 'Black Gold?'
Worm castings are a deep, dark brown in color, and contain many times the nutrient levels of typical garden or lawn soil. Fed N Happy worm castings’ nutrients are highly bioavailable, meaning plants’ roots are easily able to break down and absorb nutrients. Worm castings are so useful some gardeners raise their own worms just to have a constant supply of castings!
Why should I use worm castings in my garden?
Worm castings are full of organic matter, micronutrients, and microorganisms that work harmoniously to permit a more bioavailable, pH-resilient soil. The microorganisms naturally present in worm castings work slowly over time to continue to release vital plant nutrients.
Worm castings contain up to 10 times the nutrient levels of lawn soil, but possess low levels of essential nutrients like iron, which means it won't cause nutrient or pH burn, unlike commercial or artificial fertilizers. Also unlike traditional fertilizers, the makeup and structure of worm castings works to store and retain nutrients, preventing water from leaching vital nutrients from your soil.
